calaveras de azucar
we constructed makeshift crosses, we painted
eyes upon sugared skulls. curlicues of smoke,
pungent sage, the corridero's lamentations
reminded me of a boy i tasted once --
i kissed the skeleton tattoos, dancing,
smiling at me from his bare shoulders.
only once did he ever speak my name.
